Understanding Nepal

Arguably one of the most diverse countries in the world, the plurality of Nepal has been a great revelation since the onset of democracy in 1990s. This work engages the historic transition of Nepal from a monolithic Hindu kingdom to a multicultural democracy. However, the new political class, the marginalized majority of non-caste ethnic groups, as well as the oppressed religious and caste minorities often found themselves caught in the interstices of the old and the new in negotiating this transitional terrain. Muslims in Nepal are the perfect example of such a group in transition. Classically the other religion in an overwhelmingly Hindu-Buddhist-Animist cultural set-up the Muslims are one group which has the potential to disrupt the linear histories and cultural totalities of a society where a Hindu monarchy has served as the fountainhead of power for more than two countries..

Sri Lanka In Crisis

This book dissects the Sri Lanka crisis into three parts. The first is a clear description of the problem which rejects the conventional formulation of the problem as ethnic, religious, or linguistic. In second part, the author argues that the only viable solution to the crisis is devolution of state power, which means the replacement of the present unitary Constitution with a devolved federal-type Constitution, This, the Sinhala majority is unreasonably opposed to implementing soon. In third part, the author states that because the LTTE is an anti-Indian terrorist outfit which assassinated Rajiv Gandhi, hence India has to regard the LTTE as part of the problem, and definitely not a part of the Solution. If Sri Lanka adopts a federal type Constitution upfront, then Indian will have to intervene on behalf of the Sri Lanka government and uses its vast military capability to fix the LTTE and decisively end the menace it represents.

The aim of the Military Affairs series is to add to a nationwide debate on the security policies of India. And the intellectual pluralism that stems from this could, in turn, provide India's politico-bureaucratic elite an idea of the national mood on military issues and enable them to direct the country's policies in the right direction. Until recently a large number of India's politicians, and the people they represent were only interested in regional issues within India's border. But that has begun to change. Across India, the media, a number of academics and intellectuals have started to debate issues of national security and military affairs, specially so, in an era when India faces and fights terrorism unleashed by Pakistan. This is the start of a healthy tradition in a country, which only recently was said to be without a tradition on strategic thought.

In these Narsingh Narain Memorial Lectures delivered by eleven eminent thinkers, some of these concerns have been forcefully brought out. The reflections here, however do not merely express the fears and the misgivings. There are many suggestions on public policies and individual attitudes. Some of these may; work some may not. India's Security Concerns In The Indian Ocean Region

At the cusp of the 21st century, the security of the Indian Ocean region continues to be confronted with boundless threats, more from non-traditional sources, that have obviously become manifold in the post-Cold War era. These threats emanate from non-military sources like drug-trafficking, frequent cross-border terrorism, proliferation of small arms. This book examines these aspects vis-à-vis the security of the Indian Ocean. it lays emphasis on the fact that these sources of threat to security are inherent within the region and so their containment is only feasible through increased economic interaction and cooperation on security-related issues among the member countries through Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC). It also examines India's threat perceptions and its capabilities to meet those threats and its role in the IOR-ARC.

Fire Within

"Grandslam, the first part of Fire Within, was the initial literary offering of 14 year old author Ronen Chatterjee. It traces the story of three generations of Roys-Rohan, his son Rohit and his grandson, Raj. It recounts in absorbing detail their fascination, addiction and dedication to tennis. How they train, overcome obstacles and extend themselves to become world class tennis players, forms the narrative of this book. Sometimes the story is written as a flashback and sometimes the tale is in the present-woven together by the main protagonists who are part of the same family. Part Two of Fire Within, entitled ""Quest"", traces the lives of these tennis players as they make a niche for themselves after their playing days are over. Here Ronen displays his deep concern for, and awareness of, issues of current relevance. There are very few fictional productions which have been written by fourteen years olds for readers of their own age group. Fire Within is an unusual effort of creative writing that has flowed out of the imagination of a precocious Indian author in English whose literary skills are truly remarkable."

Indian National Movement

This volume represents the first statement of the vast research project conducted by the author, along with some of his colleagues, on the history of India's freedom struggle. As part of the effort to evolve an entirely new framework that incorporates the theoretical advances made by the Italian Marxist thinker, Antonio Gramsci, as well as the understanding of those who actually fought for India's freedom, it argues that the Indian national movement was not composed of just a string of ad hoc movements and responses to British initiatives but had a specific strategy, forged above all by Gandhiji, integrating all aspects of its own activity, whether mass struggle or constitutional action or constructive work.
